Created by Gabrielle Roth and practiced by tens of thousands worldwide, 5Rhythms® is a philosophy, perspective, performance art, and dynamic movement practice grounded in the belief that putting the psyche in motion will allow it to heal itself. For those new to this moving meditation, as soon as you enter the space, music is playing, and people practice in silence, with occasional cues from the facilitator to focus on elements like breath, body parts, weight, pulse, and release. There are no steps to learn or “wrong” way to participate; just allow your body to respond to the music. Attention can be focused on your feet, moving them and breathing. Connecting with others can be challenging at first, but every invitation encourages movement and exploration, a universal medicine that transcends languages, cultures, and age groups. The five rhythms—flowing, staccato, chaos, lyrical, and stillness—serve as teachers, helping deepen your relationship to your body, heart, mind, soul, and spirit. While some feel at home right away, others may feel self-conscious. The practice welcomes people with varying experience levels, and each person’s dance is unique, subtle, powerful, and, over time, transformative. Where 5Rhythms is practiced, a community is born, fostering change, support, and a safe space to break free from the ego and awaken the unpredictable, vibrant part of ourselves. The practice actively seeks and values diversity in its community, welcoming a range of racial, cultural, and national identities, sexual and gender orientations, religious backgrounds, and more.
