“At our January meeting, we didn’t get around to sewing our books that we made covers for. So for our February 19 meeting we will sew the sections into our covers. Unless of course some of you decided to try it on your own. I gave everyone my initial written directions that I am revising and adding photos for. But I can’t quit making the covers.
In the meantime I learned I have been doing link stitches wrong for many years. Maybe I just misinterpreted other people’s methods or their methods were wrong too. Well, maybe not wrong but they could be improved upon. I will attach a video link for a better way to do the link stitch. My problem involved the direction in which you encircle the previous stitch two sections down. Better seen than written. Come to class and I’ll show how to do it right.
So here’s the link to see someone do it right: https://youtu.be/ sxkarOsNhsM. You don’t have to watch the whole thing but this guy is a very professional bookbinder, and his extensive YouTube library covers just about everything a bookbinder would ever need to know, including how to make tools. Go to minute 20 or so to see how he does the link stitch. He also does kettle stitches on the ends just as we will do. (He is doing the usual Coptic book cover attachment method instead of our dragonfly stitch.)
So bring your signatures and covers to class so we can do it together. People who didn’t join us in January can bring any unfinished project to work on. We will also use this event to plan out the rest of the year. Please think of one project you would like us to do in 2026. It can be a specific book structure, a sewing technique or a surface design project the class might enjoy. (For example, someone mentioned marbling with shaving cream.) Check out Instagram, YouTube or instruction books for ideas.”
